Welsh Place Names

Most Welsh place names are descriptive of their location. An understanding of what the name means is often a vital clue to knowing the place itself. Most Welsh places also have an English name. In some cases this is merely a corrupt version of the original Welsh name. In other cases the English name is totally unrelated to the Welsh name (e.g. Abertawe and Swansea). For further information please see our Guide to Welsh Place Names.

Places to Visit in
South Wales
BY SWANSEA VALLEY HOLIDAY COTTAGES

Nestled in the tiny hamlet of Cilybebyll, it is hard to believe that your tranquil holiday cottage is just 45 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of capital city Cardiff. Yet getting from your holiday cottage to any South Wales tourist destination is easy thanks to our central location and the excellent road network.

For instance, you are only 20 minutes drive away from Swansea’s new Waterfront Museum and just half an hour from a surf lesson on Rhossili beach in the Gower. Should you fancy a spot of sea fishing in Ferryside, it is within a leisurely 30 minute drive, or a visit to see the Little Egret at the National Wetlands Centre is just under 20 miles.

South Wales is split into six main regions, with your cottage in the Swansea, Gower and the Vale of Neath area. Climb to the top of the mountain and on a clear day you will see Mumbles Head, the beginning of the Gower peninsular, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From the Gower you can see into next-door Carmarthenshire with its fishing, beaches and open spaces, and further along the route west is Pembrokeshire, home to Britain’s smallest city of St Davids.

To the north of your holiday cottage, a mountain drive takes you to the Brecon Beacons from which you take a trip to the Wye Valley, and see the pretty town of Hay – the Town of Books. Cardiff Coast and the Valleys of South Wales are an unmissable stop on the itinerary, with the mock dinosaur-egg beach of Llantwit Major on the Heritage Coast, and the World Heritage Big Pit Museum, a reminder of the coal mining era.

Elsewhere in Wales, the roads are good but a bit slower, especially in the mountains and through Mid Wales. Wales may be just 170 miles from North to South but it can still take 4 or 5 hours. If you have never driven in Wales before you will be pleased to know that the UK has the EU’s safest roads. Armed with the A-Z Atlas you should have no problems in finding your way around and enjoying a relaxing holiday. If this is your first visit to Wales and you feel a bit unsure of your surroundings – don’t worry. The area is well blessed with amenities, the road network excellent and there is an endless supply of great places to visit.
