Carbon Neutral Cottage Holidays

Welsh Oak Tree

Our 'Carbon Neutral Cottage Holiday Scheme' allows our guests to offset the environmental impact of a cottage holiday in Wales through climate-friendly projects (such as tree planting) at our farm in the Swansea Valley.

Did you know a one-week holiday at our farm cottages can results in the emission of half a tonne of carbon dioxide?
We used a carbon calculator to estimate the amount of carbon emitted into the atmosphere as a result of an average one-week family holiday at one of our cottages - we included driving emissions and energy use in the cottage.

But it doesn't mean to say you shouldn't come on holiday!
At Swansea Valley Holiday Cottages we are helping our guests to think and act green. By joining our carbon neutral cottage holiday scheme you will be leaving behind something that will benefit the environment for years to come and you'll have peace of mind knowing your carbon footprint has been wiped out.

You can buy carbon neutral car insurance from our affiliates ibuyeco.

Carbon Neutralise My Holiday!

We offer our guests three options to carbon neutralise their holiday at Plas Farm in South Wales.

OPTION ONE - CLIMATE FRIENDLY FUND
Pay us £10 on arrival at your holiday cottage. We will place this in a fund which will be used to carry out climate-friendly projects at the farm. We will present you with a certificate (printed on recycled paper naturally!) with a personal dedication if you wish and details of the particular project your carbon offset money will be helping. Next Project: Planting apple and cherry trees along the farm drive. The bullfinches will love this!

OPTION TWO - PLANT AN OAK TREE
As a permanent reminder of your visit to Wales - leave behind a tree! Trees soak up carbon dioxide and produce oxygen - in fact, one tree grown to maturity can soak up as much as one tonne of carbon dioxide so by planting one tree at the farm, you will help to offset the carbon footprint of your holiday. We will provide you with an oak sapling at a cost of £10 and you can have the pleasure of planting it in a woodland area behind the holiday cottages. We will also give you a certificate to commemorate the event!

OPTION THREE - PLANT A SPECIMEN TREE
Plant a specimen tree with protective guard in one of the parkland fields at Plas Farm. This option is a little more expensive at £50 and you will need to make arrangements with us before you arrive. You will receive a certificate with picture and will be able to keep an eye on its progress over the years - we will have a dedicated page on this website once we have our first taker!

That's it! We hope you would like to carbon neutralise your cottage holiday with us in Wales. Our philosophy at Swansea Valley Holiday Cottages is best summed up by Edmund Burke,

"Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little."

Why be carbon neutral?

The Earth’s atmosphere is warming as a result of human activities, such as burning coal, oil and natural gas. This releases carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases form a blanket around the Earth, trapping heat and raising temperatures on the ground. This is steadily changing our climate.

Some anticipated effects include sea level rise, repercussions to agriculture, reductions in the ozone layer, increased intensity and frequency of extreme weather events, and the spread of disease.

To stabilise the atmosphere, deep reductions in our emissions of greenhouse gases are required; the UK and other EU countries are committed to a 60% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050. Carbon dioxide is the main contributor responsible for 80% of emissions from industrialised countries.

We aim to do our bit by giving you the means to come on a carbon-neutral holiday in Wales.
